Privacy Policy
Version 2026-07-12 · Effective 12 July 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Openrooo (we, us) handles your personal information. We are bound by the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), as amended by the Privacy and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2024. Because Openrooo serves the ethically non-monogamous community, much of the information you share is sensitive information and we treat it with heightened care.
1. What we collect
- Account details: username, email address, and a hashed password. We do not collect your legal name or phone number to register.
- Sensitive information (only with your consent): sexual orientation, gender, relationship structure, interests, and related profile content. This is sensitive information under the Privacy Act and receives extra protection.
- Profile & content: your bio, photos and videos, journals, links, connections, events, and community activity.
- Age assurance: your date of birth, which we collect and retain to confirm you are 18 or older and to display your age to others where you allow it, along with a record of whether and how your age was verified. Where a third-party age-check is used we receive only a pass/fail result and the method — we do not store identity documents.
- Technical & usage data: approximate location for Australia-only and safety purposes (suburb-level, never precise GPS), device and log data, and privacy-first analytics.
2. Consent for sensitive information
We collect sensitive information only where you have given us your consent — for example, by completing your profile. You can withdraw consent by editing or removing that information, or by deleting your account. Withdrawing consent may limit features that rely on it.
3. How we use your information
We use your information to:
- provide and personalise the Service, including discovery, matching and events;
- keep the community safe (moderation, trust signals, blocking, reports);
- verify eligibility (age and location);
- process subscriptions and payments;
- communicate with you about your account and safety; and
- comply with our legal obligations.
4. Private messages are end-to-end encrypted
Your direct and group messages are end-to-end encrypted. We cannot read their content, and message content is never sent to our servers for analysis. Safety prompts run only on your own device.
5. How we store and protect your information
We use encryption in transit and at rest, access controls, and relationship-based authorisation so that people only see what they are permitted to see. Trust scores are computed from behavioural metadata, not message content, and numeric scores are never shown to other users. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information and to notify you and the regulator of an eligible data breach as required by law.
6. Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with service providers who help us run the Service — such as our cloud database and storage, payment processor, and content moderation providers — under contracts that require them to protect it and use it only for that purpose. We may disclose information where required or authorised by law, or to protect the safety of a person.
7. Overseas recipients
Some of our service providers store or process data outside Australia (for example in Singapore, the United States, or the European Union). The Privacy Act permits overseas storage where we take reasonable steps to ensure the recipient handles your information consistently with the APPs. By using the Service you acknowledge this overseas processing.
8. Your rights
You may access and correct your personal information, and request a copy of your data, from your settings. You can delete your account at any time; deletion removes your profile and associated personal data, subject to any information we must retain to meet legal obligations or to address safety or abuse. We aim to action data-access and deletion requests promptly.
9. Cookies & analytics
We use privacy-first analytics to understand and improve the Service. We minimise the data collected, do not use it to identify you to third parties, and strip sensitive fields before they leave your device.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we make a material change we will update the version and effective date above and, where required, ask you to re-consent before you continue using the Service.
11. Contact & complaints
If you have a question or a privacy complaint, contact our support team through the in-app help or the contact address published on our website. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.
